Search "GE C-arm" and you will run into decades of product history, because GE HealthCare has been building surgical C-arms under the OEC name longer than most of the clinicians using them have been in practice. The lineup that actually matters to a buyer today breaks into three groups: the legacy models that built GE's reputation, the previous-generation workhorses still widely in service (and heavily represented on the used market), and the current flat panel and image-intensifier systems GE sells new (and now becoming available refurbished). Here is how they actually relate to each other.

The Legacy Line: Where It All Started

Before the 9800 Plus, GE's OEC platform ran through the 9000, then the 9400, then the 9600 — each generation adding image processing power and digital capability on top of the same core image-intensifier design. These older systems are largely out of active production and support today, but they matter for one practical reason: they explain why the GE OEC name carries the reputation it does. GE has been iterating on the same core design philosophy, simple point-and-shoot operation, dual-side C-arm controls, and rugged image intensifier hardware, for well over two decades, and the newer systems inherit that philosophy directly.

The Previous-Generation Workhorses: 9800 Plus and 9900 Elite

The OEC 9800 Plus, and OEC 9900 Elite are both image-intensifier systems, and both remain in heavy active use, the 9800 Plus alone has more than 11,000 units still working in facilities worldwide. The 9800 Plus is GE's general-purpose workhorse: a 15 kW rotating-anode generator, three C-arm configurations (9-inch, 12-inch, and Super C with 55 degrees of overscan), and image tools like Smart Metal and Smart Window that automatically compensate when hardware or collimation changes what the detector sees. It is built around three-click point-and-shoot simplicity and dual-side controls so nobody has to walk around the table to adjust the system.

The 9900 Elite sits a tier above the 9800 Plus and is one generation newer. It uses the same 15 kW generator and rotating-anode tube family but adds Dynamic Range Management (DRM), GE calls it Precision Imaging, which processes bone and soft tissue or vasculature separately within each preset imaging profile (General, Orthopedic, Spine, Vascular, Bolus Chase, and Cardiac) rather than applying one generic image algorithm to everything. Its standout feature is Vas MTS (Motion Tolerant Subtraction), a "no-mask" digital subtraction angiography technique that tolerates patient or table motion during a DSA run, something conventional mask-based subtraction cannot do without producing motion artifact. The 9900 Elite also introduced the dual flat-panel monitor cart, tri-mode 12"/9"/6" image intensifier options, and a tiered software structure — ESP, then PM Care, then increasingly capable vascular platforms, up to a full Cardiac platform with interventional vascular capability, that GE has carried forward into its current product line.

The Current Lineup: One and Elite, Each in Two Detector Flavors

GE's current OEC lineup is organized around two chassis, One and Elite, each offered with a choice of detector technology: a conventional image intensifier (the "II" designation) or GE's CMOS flat panel detector (the "CFD" designation). This is the same relationship in both product lines: the II and CFD versions of a given chassis share the same mainframe, C-arm geometry, and workflow design, and differ primarily in the detector and the image quality and dose performance that comes with it.

OEC One and OEC One CFD are GE's compact, all-in-one platform, built for space-constrained ORs and multi-specialty use. OEC One (II) pairs a high-DQE (65%) image intensifier and 1k x 1k camera with a 27-inch display and a 10.1-inch TechView touchscreen tablet, running on a 2.5 kW generator with GE's ADRO (Adaptive Dynamic Range Optimization), Enhanced Motion Artifact Reduction, and AutoTrak image processing. OEC One CFD swaps in a 21 cm CMOS flat panel detector with 1.5k x 1.5k image processing, feeding a 4K 27-inch display, and adds Live Zoom and three procedure-specific configurations (Standard, PM Care, and Vas 25) tuned for orthopedic, pain management, and peripheral vascular work respectively.

OEC Elite and OEC Elite CFD are GE's premium platform, positioned for higher procedure complexity and vascular-heavy caseloads. Elite CFD is available with either a 21 cm or 31 cm CMOS flat panel detector, in either an Ergo C or Super C arm geometry, four configurations in total — and it is genuinely differentiated hardware, not just a bigger number: its detector sustains full 1.5k x 1.5k resolution at full 30 fps frame rate without the pixel-binning tradeoff that limits most flat panel competitors, and GE states it is the only flat detector on the market that offers true continuous fluoroscopy at that resolution. The 15 kW generator runs on battery-buffered power delivery for currents up to 150 mA in dense anatomy, and the system displays on a 32-inch 4K UHD monitor. Elite CFD carries forward the same tiered software structure as the 9900 Elite, ESP, PM Care, Basic Vascular, Vascular 15, Vascular MTS, and Cardiac, right down to including a "9900" preset imaging profile for continuity with the legacy platform. The image-intensifier Elite (II) shares that same chassis, platform tiering, and workflow design, running the same proven rotating-anode generator technology as its CFD sibling for facilities that do not need flat panel detector performance.

Which GE C-Arm Actually Fits Your Practice

If your procedure mix is straightforward orthopedics, pain management, or general surgery and budget efficiency is the priority, the 9800 Plus or 9900 Elite (refurbished)  cover that ground well. If you want current flat panel image quality in that same compact, easy-to-move footprint, OEC One CFD is the step up. If your caseload includes meaningful vascular, cardiac, or hybrid OR work, the Elite line, either II or CFD , is built for it, with the CFD version earning its premium through genuinely higher sustained image quality at full frame rate rather than just a bigger detector on paper.
