Endocavity ultrasound uses a probe inserted into a body cavity — transvaginally for OB/GYN and early pregnancy evaluation, or transrectally for prostate imaging — to get closer proximity to target anatomy than external imaging allows.
Transvaginal ultrasound is used for gynecologic and early obstetric imaging, while transrectal ultrasound is primarily used for prostate imaging and biopsy guidance. Both use a similarly designed endocavity probe.
