The Fujifilm Echelon Oval takes a different architectural approach, using an oval-shaped bore rather than a circular one. Understanding what that oval means clinically — for patients, for technologists, and for image quality — explains why this system has a distinctive place in the 1.5T market.
74 cm Oval: The Widest Wide Bore at 1.5T
The Echelon Oval features a 74 cm oval bore, which Fujifilm describes as the widest wide bore in the industry at 1.5T. The oval geometry is specifically designed around the shape of the human body — wider laterally where patient shoulders are broadest, with more overhead clearance. A patient lying in the Echelon Oval experiences approximately the same overhead clearance as a standard bore but substantially more lateral room, particularly in the shoulder and upper torso region where standard bore patients most commonly feel constrained.
The 63 cm patient table is the widest 1.5T table available, complementing the wide bore with lateral support for larger patients. The table lowers to 20 inches — wheelchair height — making transfers significantly easier for elderly, non-ambulatory, and post-surgical patients. Weight capacity is 550 pounds. The combined effect of wider bore, wider table, and lower table height is an MRI system that accommodates the broadest practical range of patient body types without requiring special positioning accommodations.
WIT: Workflow Integrated Technology
The Echelon Oval's WIT (Workflow Integrated Technology) suite addresses a practical challenge in MRI operations: the technologist in the control room cannot efficiently monitor and adjust patient setup without walking in and out of the scan room repeatedly. WIT moves control capabilities to the patient's side.
The WIT Monitor is a touchscreen mounted at the gantry that allows the operator to review and update patient information, verify exam protocols, and confirm setup without returning to the control console. Wireless Gating enables ECG and respiratory gating setup verification at the gantry face without running cables back to the console. The In-Room Start/Pause function allows the technologist to start and pause sequences while standing next to the patient — useful for positioning confirmation scans and for patients who need reassurance during the exam.
The WIT Mobile Table is a detachable patient table that can be moved to the patient rather than requiring the patient to be brought to the fixed table. For patients arriving by wheelchair or stretcher, this eliminates the transfer step that is most physically demanding and most anxiety-provoking for non-ambulatory patients. The table retains power elevation capability even when detached from the system.
SynergyDrive and Clinical Applications
SynergyDrive is Fujifilm's integrated workflow platform for the Echelon Oval, combining Evolution software with WIT to cover the full exam pipeline from patient registration through post-processing. AutoPose automatically positions slice prescriptions based on anatomical references, providing consistent results from patient to patient and reducing the planning time that varies across technologist experience levels. CopyDrive carries slice positioning from one sequence to the next for multi-sequence protocols, eliminating repeated positioning steps.
QuickScan protocols support complete examinations in compressed timeframes — a full five-minute brain exam protocol is available as a standard offering. Isotropic 3D acquisitions with single-click MPR enable one-acquisition protocols where the technologist acquires once and reconstructs in any plane offline, reducing scan time while maintaining multiplanar flexibility. The clinical application range covers neuro, vascular, orthopedic, body, breast, prostate, cardiac, and pediatric imaging, with dedicated sequences including RADAR motion compensation and VASC-ASL non-contrast MRA.
SoftSound and HOAST
SoftSound reduces audible scan noise by up to 90 percent through optimized gradient waveform design, addressing one of the most consistent patient comfort complaints about MRI. In-bore lighting and ventilation complete the patient experience design. HOAST (Higher Order Active Shimming Technology) maintains field homogeneity across the wide oval volume, supporting fat suppression, chemical shift imaging, and spectroscopy with consistency across the patient cross-sections that the wide bore accommodates.
Bottom Line: The Echelon Oval is a 1.5T system designed around two priorities that are often in tension: patient experience and clinical capability.
